if you can find this place you should sign up for the Amazing Race, home cooking
hidden in a retirement community, hint: don't be intimidated by the gate, drive up,
press code for restaurant, try the crater pancakes--they're worth waiting for

Haleiwa Joe's- Haiku Gardens
hidden treasure in Kaneohe, stunning views, fantastic food, the brunch is only $21.95

Formaggio
decent wine and cheese in a residential shopping mall, find a table yourself
and the wait staff will come to you

Olive Tree Cafe
opens at 5pm, get there early, tables fill fast, good music and food, bring your own
booze, there's a store right next door, nice place to spend a couple of hours and
hang out

La Gelateria
this is a gelato factory, but you can buy gelato to go and it is superb

The Highway Inn
a totally local eatery, specializing in ono Hawaiian food, we love places like this

Tammy's Polynesian Market
a tiny grocery store specializing in Samoan food. highly recommend the pani popo; you can call ahead and order a batch for under $10; it is usually not ready until noon. you'll impress locals if you show up with a pan of this stuff; it's surprisingly delicious.

Some of the Coolest Places
(and we're running out of them)

Tantalus Look Out
get a bird's eye view of Honolulu without flying

La Mariana
one of a kind place, the last real Tiki bar on Oahu

Some of the Best Free* Stuff To Do
(if the time is right)

Sunset on the Beach
go early, stake a spot, you can return later

Hanauma Bay
check the summer schedule, you can go at night and snorkel, always draws a crowd

Waikiki Shell
check the events calender, get some take out food and drinks, sit in
park behind the Shell and enjoy the sounds from the show

First Friday Gallery Walk
great way to check out downtown and local art, have some pupus and drinks

skip the Aloha Stadium, this is the real deal, although some call it the "Kam"
swap meet, say "Kamehameha"

Kapiolani Community College Farmers' Market
a good way to get local food and produce

*or as close to free as you can get

Some of the Best Catamarans to Sail

Maita'i Catamaran
nice boat, be sure to use the discount
coupon,
it will drop the price $5

Na Hoku II
after a tragedy, this icon of Waikiki is back, be sure to say you're a repeat
customer and save 5 dollars; the sunset cruise fills fast, so best to book the day before; the boat sails
90 minutes and is beached for 30 minutes prior to sailing; you can board the boat as soon as
it beaches, so you can get an extra 30 minutes of drinking in if you want.

Some of the Best Shave Ice

Island Snow Kailua
best and most variety of flavors

Waiola Bakery and Shave Ice
close to Waikiki yet local still

Some of the Best Bakeries

Liliha Bakery
an institution, you've got to try the coco puffs and coffee cake

Leonard's
one word: malasadas

Some of the Best Cultural Places

Bishop Museum
worth checking out at least once in your life

The Contemporary Museum
a class act in an unlikely residential area

Hawaii Plantation Village
off the beaten path, but worth checking out, not
crowded, tour takes about an hour

Hawaii Army Museum
can't beat the price (free), redeems itself by paying
tribute to Hawaiian warriors too

Some of the Best Music from Hawaii

Some of the Best Parks

Kapiolani Park
well-maintained,  lots of open space and trees, this park
has it all and more, we think of it as Honolulu's Central Park

Some of the Best Places for Appetizers (Pupus)

Ocean Club
this was one of our favorite places, but sadly, it temporarily closed; it used
to have incredible pupus at a low price

Brew Moon
enjoyable island-brewed beer in a trendy setting, pupus are half
off during happy hour (3 pm to 7 pm), would suggest the beer crackers
and kalua pig quesadillas. prices rise after 7 pm so order all you
want before then (all this only applies to the Ward Center location)

Some of the Best Beaches

Royal Hawaiian
the beach in front of this hotel is one of the best. it has nice sand,
no rocks, it is centrally located, and there is a sand bar you can walk on
out into the ocean a good 100 yards or so.

Kahala Beach
the beach in front of the Kahala Hotel is public, so don't be intimidated by that, it
is a well-maintained beach with close-to-shore swimming areas, you can also walk on
the beach toward Diamond Head and enjoy a secluded stretch of beach all the way
up to Hunakai street, note:  you can park your car in the Kahala Mandarin Hotel garage,
buy a drink at the poolside cafe, and get your parking validated (four hours for the cost of a drink).

Laniakea Beach
the best beach for seeing turtles. not a lot of tourists.  look, but don't touch the honu. they're sacred.

Mokuleia Beach
popularized by the Lost series.

Sunset Beach
on the North Shore, dream blue water, lots of sand, a classic beach
